2018 Chevrolet Malibu vs Honda Accord: Midsized Showdown

By  |

The midsized sedan segment is in a declining state but that did not stop the Honda Accord from becoming one of the world’s bestselling models. The same can’t be said for the Chevrolet Malibu as sales of the midsized sedan from Chevy is pretty much above average.

The good news for Chevrolet is that the latest generation Malibu is growing in numbers consistently ever since it debuted last year. While still not a threat to Honda, the Japanese brand is not taking any chances and they have prepared a much upgraded Accord for next year.

The 2018 Honda Accord is confirmed to arrive with a 189hp 2.4L 4-pot engine for the base trim. The higher end trims will be powered by a 278hp V6 engine. Likewise, the base model will rely on CVT whereas the upper trims will be paired to a standard automatic.

The Chevrolet Malibu, on the other hand, will continue to depend on two powertrain options. The first is a 1.5L turbo-4 mill and the second is a 2L mill. The latter is simply more attractive as it can develop 250hp and 260ft-lbs of torque.

With Honda’s V6 already proved its worth on the performance front, it makes us more attracted to the next Accord. But of course, we can’t be certain with our decision as we want to make a final assessment on both the Accord and Malibu. This means that we will have to wait until the 2018 Accord arrives.
