2018 Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro Have Found The Sweet Spot
Both GM and Ford have co-developed new transmission technology that has allowed each of them to equip their vehicles with ten-speed automatic gearboxes. This seems like an overkill for critics who believe that six speeds is already sufficient for auto transmissions.
So why have the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro increased their gear numbers? Does it really bring improvements, or is it an unnecessary step to simply boost their appeal in the market?
At this juncture it’s still too early to tell, but according to Auto Guide, there are several reasons why it makes sense for vehicles to adopt ten or even nine-speed transmissions.
For one, efficiency can be improved without compromising on the vehicle’s performance as a greater gear ratio spread allows for the vehicle to find the sweet spot for any given speed or acceleration. In case you’re wondering, this is a big deal for the Mustang and Camaro.
It is evident from the implementation of the 2.3L EcoBoost engine and weight-cutting changes on the latest gen Mustang that better mileage has become one of the higher priorities for the Dearborn mare. The same can be said of the Camaro which has also undergone some dramatic changes to shave off excess weight.
