2018 Volkswagen Jetta: Odds Suggest It Will Fall Behind Honda Civic, Mazda3

The Jetta is the most popular Volkswagen here in the US and it is about to welcome a new-generation model. Due to make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month, the next-gen Jetta will need to be massive as the odds have pushed the car behind the Honda Civic and Mazda3.

The word is that the Jetta will run on a 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can develop 150hp and this won’t be enough to compete with the tenth-generation Civic.

In case you are unaware, the tenth generation Civic has been flying high on the sales front as the 1.5L turbo-4 engine it runs on can develop about 180hp and return up to 42mpg in fuel economy.

As for the Mazda3, a new generation model is expected to come out based on the Kai Concept next year and the SkyActiv-X engine which it will rely on will work together with HCCI technology to offer significant improvements in power and fuel economy.

The figures for the Mazda3 are not out yet but they are widely assumed to be better than the Honda Civic. With rival vehicles having more to offer, Volkswagen needs to dig deep if they truly want the Jetta to compete. Otherwise, the car may end rivalling the Chevrolet Cruze only.
