2019 Ford Bronco Is Heavier Than Jeep Wrangler?

By  |

After seeing Ford confirming on the development of the next-gen Ranger, we can’t help but to predict an all-out battle with the Jeep Wrangler, especially in the field of weight saving.

Jeep has already made it known that the next-gen Wrangler will be a lot lighter than its predecessor. We assumed the same for the returning Bronco, especially after seeing the amount of success achieved by the lightweight Ford F-150.

But then again, our assumptions are actually wrong as the Bronco shows no signs of being a lightweight 4×4 SUV. Ford released an email statement earlier today revealing that the Bronco will be built on a steel architecture and this is the exact same one that is being used to develop the next-gen Ranger.

For obvious reasons, this move is not meant to make the Bronco more rugged for the rough terrain as the F-150 is fully capable of off-roading, even if it has an aluminum body. We also can’t tell if the steel underpinning would mean the Bronco being heavier than the next Wrangler but the signs are suggesting so.

If the Bronco is truly heavier, it may have a sour effect on the vehicle’s fuel economy and performance optimization. But of course, it is best to wait until the official details get released next year.
