2019 Subaru WRX STI Has Different Aims Than Focus RS
The all-new Ford Focus RS has many names and one of them is the Subaru WRX STI-killer. This cannot be helped as the Focus RS is miles better than the WRX STI. The sports hatch is faster, more economical and daily drives better than its rival.
Subaru knows that they need to improve the WRX STI if they wish to conquer the affordable performance segment and their plan is to develop the next-gen model. While not official yet, the next-gen WRX STI is expected to arrive in 2018 and it will look to bring the fight to the Focus RS.
However, after seeing the all-new Subaru Impreza, we don’t think that the future WRX STI is just going to be an overpowered car. Subaru has already confirmed that the next WRX STI will be built on the new platform which debuted with the Impreza and this hints on a big safety boost for the future performance car.
The new platform is 70% stiffer than before thus signalling better handling from the WRX STI. We are still clueless on the power which the next WRX STI will offer but we can expect Subaru to try and match the 350hp 2.3L EcoBoost engine on the Focus RS.
The certainty here is that the next WRX STI will definitely outdo the Focus RS in the field of safety but will it be enough to conquer the segment? Only time will tell.
