Forget Honda Civic, Chevy Cruze Is The Jetta’s Biggest Challenge

By  |

Volkswagen has finally laid out the details on the next-gen Jetta and it allows us to confirm that the compact car is not planning to compete with the Honda Civic on level terms.

Unlike how it was in the past where the Jetta had ample power to leave the Civic biting its dust, the new model can’t match the Civic’s 174hp output. The next-gen Jetta is equipped with a 1.4L turbocharged engine with only 147hp and 184ft-lbs of torque to offer.

Despite boasting slightly more torque than the Civic, the Jetta is short on the pony count. 147hp is certainly enough for an affordable daily driver but it would also mean having the Jetta belonging in the same bracket with the Chevrolet Cruze.

The latter has a similar setup to the Jetta as it relies on a 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This particular mill can pump out 150hp and 173ft-lbs of torque. In other words, the Cruze is 3hp more powerful than the Jetta but it is 11ft-lbs short in torque count.

The difference in numbers between the Jetta and the Cruze is extremely narrow thus making it a clos an interesting contest for the two cars. Based on numbers alone, it is perhaps right to say that the Cruze is the real rival for the new Jetta.
