Mid-Engine Corvette: Did Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE Forced Its Development?

By  |

GM’s decision to develop a mid-engine Corvette C8 came as a shocker because mid-engine has never been the way of the Vettes. It makes this decision as a completely different path for the Corvette to take and many have wondered why on the sudden need for a mid-engine sports car.

GM may have yet to give a strong answer for that question and we can’t help thinking that the reason is because of the Chevrolet Camaro. GM made the first strike when they decided to make the Camaro run on the same engine that is used on the Corvette Z06. This resulted in the Camaro having the ability to create track records and rival the Z06 in its own game.

Sure, both the Z06 and the Camaro ZL1 1LE may still drive differently but not many are aware of this and the results have influenced them into taking the cheaper option – the Camaro.

The obvious solution for this ‘civil war’ mess is to change the Corvette and make them special again hence the mid-engine Corvette C8. Whether the mid-engine setup will get adopted by the entire Corvette line-up is a question that remains to get answered.
