Nissan Leaf Latest Ad Questions Consumers On Tesla Model 3 Craze

The automotive industry is going wild for the Tesla Model 3 as the future promises a pleasurable EV car that has 200 miles of driving range and is priced cheaply. For Nissan, the Tesla Model 3 is nothing more than a huge confusion and they raised their concerns about it in their latest Leaf advert.

As how you can see in the image above, Nissan openly questioned the consumers on why they are waiting for the Model 3 to go green when the Leaf is already available for a cheap. The Leaf is among the pioneers in the mainstream EV market and it has been upgraded to offer adequate driving range and decent performance. The Leaf is also affordable to own too.

Well, the ad can get responded in two ways. The first is that many are waiting for the Model 3 due to its greater driving range. The second is that many are more concerned about leaving their gasoline range behind instead of really wanting an EV car to go green.

It is a clever trick from Nissan but we are not buying into their marketing technique. This is because we see the Leaf as an outdated EV car that is desperate for a successor. What do you think?

    Nissan missed the opportunity, as a Nissan owner and an EV consumer in general I can tell you that the majority of EV consumer (brand dedicated aside) are after two thing 1) what is the range 2) how much it cost to recharge. Nissan had a grip on the market and choose to flood the market with low range and lease Vs purchase. In abt a year or so Nissan will have two maybe 3 competitor who are offering long range at affordable prices. At abt the same time Nissan will have a flood of leases that are coming back to thire dealers, you do the math….Tesla will have production issues, thire production network can’t handle the volume and they know it. All and all I think there still a small window for Nissan to turn this around, given they are smart enough to see it and don’t let thire arrogance get the best of them. The solution is right in front of them, it is sad that they’ve done see it.

    As for overall design, Model 3 beats Leaf hands down. Absolutely no comparison!

    As an owner of a Tesla model S, there is a reason that Tesla is in a different class than Nissan. I sold my other car so my model S has been my only means of transport for over two years. What many people don’t get is it’s not just the fact that Tesla has good range, but the fact that there’s a rapidly growing charging network that makes long distance travel possible. Tesla has been intelligent in stalling their superchargers along freeways.

    I have a friend with a Leaf. There really is no comparison. It takes him at least a couple of days to reach the Oregon border from the Bay Area due to a lack of level 3 chargers, and he has to use them frequently since the range is so low.

    Nissan has also been plagued with battery problems since they don’t have proper battery thermal management. People in Arizona and southern California were losing 40% of their range in two years! Nissan made the poor decision to skimp and not provide adequate thermal management for the battery.

    Also, to put it mildly, the Leaf is ugly. What Tesla has done is show that not only is a long distance EV is possible, but that it doesn’t have to look weird or ugly while being aerodynamic.

    Tesla really did design an EV from the ground up. Their skateboard battery design maximizes storage and improves handling. In just about every category the model 3 will beat a Leaf.

    Tesla also leads with battery technology and with the gigafactory they’ll have the capacity to manufacture batteries at a lower cost than anyone else. Right now Tesla has the highest energy density at the lowest cost of any EV manufacturer and also has very good reliability. I have over 43K miles on my Model S and haven’t noticed any reduction in range.

    If I were looking for a second car a model 3 would be a good choice. In my case, however, I need the larger vehicle with a hatchback for my primary vehicle since I tend to haul a lot of cargo.

    The Leaf is a conception 5 years old. Looks tired and tried. Autonomous driving None to speak of which is a promise in the model 3. The 2018 redesigned Leaf will match the 3 but before that Nissan can only play advertising game of words. Consumer are smarter than that. 400K would be buyers made deposit for the 3 a futuristic car and people don’t have to pay the rest if they don’t like it when it is available but the Leaf is a bunch of yesterday know how and there are a lot of old Leafs out there that Nissan sold with experimental batteries that Nissan need to fix and I think selling upgrade batteries to those old Leaf cars could be as good a business plan as selling dated Leafs.

    Nissan has 2 problems:
    1. The 2017 hasn’t been shown. Which probably means it’s not ready to offer 200 miles. I would love to take my Nissan Leaf to Vermont skiing. But I would need to stop twice, for a long time. With 200 miles of range, I would only need to stop once, briefly.
    2. Dealers are still not embracing EVs. I don’t care what Nissan needs to do to the dealers to get them to support EVs. (Maybe bribe them). EVery time I go to get a charge at a Nissan dealer, the spots are blocked or the chargers are off. I guarantee you that doesn’t happen at Tesla SuperChargers. Company Policy. I understand that the dealers have a problem with EVs,
    but THAT is not MY problem, it’s Nissan’s problem. If they want people to buy EVs from gasoline car companies, they need to embrace EVs, top to bottom.

    How can you say the Leaf is outdated compared to a car that will not be available for at least another year? The performance of the model 3 has been fixed in order to go into mass production. You have to compare the future Leaf with the present unproven T3.

    Leaf not remotely competitive with Model 3: (1) much, much lower range (2) no Supercharger network, which by in large eliminates all range anxiety (3) Leaf is not updateable, M3 is over the air updateable (4) M3 is way more feature rich in very meaningful ways (eg autopilot, 24/7 cellular/Internet connection, etc) (5) M3 is sold and serviced from company owned facilities vs independent dealers. As a result, incentives are dramatically different and consumer sales and service experience is dramatically different and better.

    This is not to say that the Leaf is not a fine vehicle for what it is. It simply is not even remotely competitive with Tesla Model 3.
