Tesla Claims Autopilot Reduces Accidents By 50%, Meaningless Statistics?

By  |

It wasn’t that long ago when we shared a real video of a Tesla Model S that is engaged in Autopilot mode avoiding a collision and now, Elon Musk is back to further promote the ‘autonomous’ driving technology.

The chief from Tesla Motors revealed that the Autopilot system has successfully reduced accidents by a whopping 50%. Elon shared that Tesla has been accumulating driving data from Model S and Model X owners to come up with such statistics.

The way we see it, the statistics can’t be seen as something that is very meaningful. This is because Autopilot is very new and it has not clocked enough vehicle-miles. This is especially since there were likely relatively few Tesla crashes to start with.

For example, 4 crashes decreased to 2 will display as 50% reduction. It is not as if 10,000 deaths a year caused by a crash in Tesla is decreased to a 15,000. The impact of the figures is certainly different. Of course, this is just our opinion on the above. What do make of it?
