Volkswagen Jetta Can’t Hold A Candle To Mazda3!

The next-gen Volkswagen Jetta has made its debut and it is compact vehicle which we can’t call competitive at all.

This is due to the underwhelming power figures on the Jetta caused by the application of a 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder mill. The 4-pot engine is certainly a great performer but it is behind the Honda Civic in terms of power count.

Unlike how it is on the Civic, the Jetta can only develop 147hp and 184ft-lbs of torque. It basically confirms that the Jetta is unimpressive on the HP count although it brags slightly more torque than the Civic.

In the long run, it may not serve the Jetta well – especially when Mazda is about to bring out the next-gen Mazda3. Mazda has said before that the next Mazda3 will have significant power improvements over the current model thanks to SkyActiv-X and HCCI technology. The odds are now in Mazda’s favour to beat the Civic and this will write off the Jetta’s chances to compete.

For a new Jetta, the vehicle is behind the current Mazda3 in both HP and torque thus making it an underwhelming offering. This is unless Volkswagen can pull off a miracle and switch the 1.4L unit for the 170hp turbo-4 sourced from the Golf.
