Both the 2020 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback were taken in for a safety test by IIHS and while both belong to Subaru, one more was given a better safety rating than the other.
The 2020 Subaru Legacy sedan was given the Top Safety Pick + rating by IIHS, the highest rating by the agency while the 2020 Subaru Outback was only given the Top Safety Pick rating which is, in fact, lower than what the 2019 model got.
According to IIHS, the reason why the Outback safety rating dropped was because of the headlights on the Outback. The model needed to get a Good rating to qualify for the Top Safety Pick + rating but was only given an Acceptable. The Legacy, on the other hand, received a Good rating for its optional curve-adaptive headlights.
Of course, the Legacy standard headlights were only given an Acceptable rating as well so if you do not plan to upgrade, both models will be sporting the same Top Safety Pick rating.
