Honda Plans To Do One Better Than Ford-GM With 11 Gears!

Earlier this year, both Ford and GM summed up their short term collaboration through launching the all-new 10-speed automatic gearbox. The new transmission is built to further optimize power handling and offer quicker as well as more precise shifting.

The 10-speed unit has proved its worth as it was able to enhance the performance of the all-new Chevrolet Camaro and also the Ford F-150 Raptor. If you think transmission gears can’t go beyond ten in the near future, you may be wrong.

Honda has apparently patented a new gearbox that will arrive with 11 speeds. The patent suggests that the gearbox is already in development and it describes the mechanism as a triple-clutch transmission.

We personally don’t understand the need for that many gears but for Honda, they see it as a necessary step to further bring the automotive industry forward. The Japanese carmaker believes that the third clutch will be used to reduce the drop in torque that you get with a dual-clutch transmission.

The details are not revealed yet but we can expect to hear more about it from Honda in the near future. The question is, will the triple clutch gearbox be able to impress?
